Late last week Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News named Darrin Horn as a possible candidate to replace the retiring Dave Odom at South Carolina.
I was reading South Carolina beat writer Seth Emerson's blog for The State in Columbia. He lists VCU coach Anthony Grant and first-year Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall as possible candidates but also says that they aren't likely candidates. Grant is in a very good situation at VCU and Marshall is only in his first-year at the helm of the Shockers.
With a Sun Belt Championship, and possibly a first-round win in the NCAA Tournament, Horn's stock goes up. Emerson doesn't really know how long Eric Hyman is going to draw out the hiring process. You have to remember it is late January, Odom has already announced his retirement and the storm of possibilities for his replacement is just building steam.
We still have February for this to go on, for bloggers, and message boards to throw Horn's name out there as a candidate. This Western team has very high expectations for this season and the last thing they need down the stretch is their coach's name being tossed around out there that he is leaving.
While I did question Horn on Friday on his reaction to being named in DeCourcy's blog, he said he didn't have a reaction and that he is the coach of Western Kentucky University.
We'll leave it at that for now. I don't expect Rob Herbst of the Daily News or James Brandenburg of WBKO to question Horn every opportunity about the job. Just because that is unnecessary. If sources close to South Carolina start becoming more serious about Horn than I think the pressure for Horn to talk about it will become more serious, but for now it is what it is, a simple blog throwing his name out there. One man's opinion.
Will it be an interesting storyline to possibly follow? Absolutley.
But is it fair to question Horn every moment he sits in front of a microphone. Nope.
Horn perhaps said it best when the cameras and microphones were turned off on Friday as he left the media room at Diddle Arena.
"Oh what a business."
